I’ve Been Designing Learning Content for 15+ Years. Here’s What Never Changes

I’ve seen every learning trend come and go. CD‑ROMs. Flash‑based learning. The LMS boom. Microlearning. Gamification. AI.

Some of it stuck. Most of it did not.

But one thing that has never changed is that if you do not understand your audience, your content will not work.

Not for long, and not at scale.

8 Core Learning Design Principles

Whether I was designing for global sales teams, medical professionals, financial analysts, or warehouse workers, the biggest wins always came from moments where I stopped designing for the “user” and started designing for real people in real contexts.

Here is what that has looked like across my career.

1. Cultural Fit Is the Gatekeeper

I once led a project for a Middle Eastern client where the visuals featured Western business dress and interaction styles. Polished? Yes. But it missed the mark completely.

The opening screen, for instance, showed a group of men and women in suits shaking hands over coffee – a scene that overlooked local cultural norms around gender representation and workplace interaction.

The feedback was quiet at first, with lower engagement and fewer completions. Then we heard it directly: “This does not feel like it is for us.

We rebuilt the visual language with local norms in mind, and engagement picked up almost immediately.

What I learned: Cultural alignment is not about localization – it is about trust. Get it wrong, and the rest of your design does not stand a chance.

2. Translation Doesn’t Equal Meaning

I have worked on enough multilingual projects to know this: starting translation before the source content is final is like trying to run while the floor is still being built beneath you.

Even worse when translation is treated like a mechanical swap of words. It is not. It is an interpretation of tone, rhythm, and intent, and that is always human. I know of an application‑based training where button and field names were completely different from those in the English version, leaving learners confused and disengaged.

We have improved this by locking our English content early, using shared glossaries, and bringing in local experts to review tone and nuance.

Lesson learned: AI tools help, but review by someone who knows the learner’s language and the context is non‑negotiable.

3. Visual Credibility Is Fragile

In a healthcare module, we once showed a doctor sitting while the patient stood. To us, it was a layout convenience.

To the learners – medical professionals – it was disrespectful and unrealistic.

We fixed the visual. But it reminded me how easily trust can be broken when your content fails to reflect real environments.

What I do now: I validate key scenes with someone from the target profession before the art is locked. Always.

4. Relevance Respects the Learner’s Time

A lot of compliance content is the same every year. I have watched learners zone out, click through, or worse – drop off entirely.

One thing that worked? Adding a short pre‑assessment. If they demonstrated mastery, they skipped ahead to the updated bits. The rest still got the full course. Completion rates jumped by nearly 35%, while satisfaction scores rose from 3.2 to 4.8 out of 5. Feedback shifted from frustration to appreciation. One learner even said, “Finally, a compliance course that respects my time.

My takeaway: personalization does not always require AI. Sometimes it just means not repeating what someone already knows.

5. Complexity Isn’t Clever, It’s Expensive

There was a time we pitched an elaborate gamified solution for quality-check training in a factory. It was beautiful on paper. But the people doing that work needed something clear and fast.

We swapped it for an image‑based quiz. Same objective, half the time to build, twice the clarity.

The best solution is usually the simplest one that works.

6. Virtual Training Needs Fewer Slides, More Room to Think

In virtual instructor-led training (vILT), the temptation is to port over your classroom deck and read through it.

Please don’t.

Some of the most engaged sessions I have seen came from formats that made space for interaction – polls, breakout rooms, gamified recaps.

I once ran a Six Thinking Hats activity to explain different perspectives on AR/VR concepts. In another session, I used a Treasure Hunt activity to introduce EdTech that got 100% participation – without chasing anyone.

It reminded me that learners do not miss classrooms – they miss connection.

7. Feedback Is the Only Real QA

Early in my career, I thought testing was enough. But learners always find the gaps we did not. Now, I rely on three things:

  • A 1‑question pulse after each module
  • A 3‑minute “was this useful?” survey
  • A 10‑minute post‑pilot chat with real learners

The insights I have gained from those conversations? Invaluable.

In one project, several learners mentioned they were “getting lost” between activities because the navigation icons were not intuitive. Based on that feedback, we redesigned the flow with clearer progress cues and action prompts, and completion rates jumped significantly in the next release.

In another instance, we initially planned to create end‑to‑end web‑based training. But feedback revealed that learners preferred short, focused demos and simulations showing exactly how to perform key tasks, something they could return to as a quick reference whenever needed.

Analytics tell you what happened. Learners tell you why.

8. Accessibility Learning Design

Every time I skip alt text or assume color contrast is “probably fine,” someone using assistive technology pays the price.

When we started building accessibility into the design phase – not bolting it on at the end – the results improved for everyone.

What I do now:

  • Keyboard‑test every flow
  • Run basic WCAG checks in Figma
  • Validate with real users using screen readers

Lesson: designing for inclusion is not extra work. It is just better work.

 

Don’t Design for Users. Design for Humans.

After decades in this field, I have stopped asking “what is the best format?”

Instead, I ask: “What is it like to be this person, learning this thing, under these conditions?”

That question has never let me down.

And if AI, data, or new formats are involved, great. Just make sure they serve that human insight, not replace it because tools come and go. But when you deeply understand your audience, your content always lands.
