The soil culture grows in, written down for the
first time
In July 2019, Acky began ending his monthly CEO updates to Magicians with a reflection about something other than the immediate business. Sometimes it came from a book. Sometimes from a conversation, an experience, or a question he had not yet resolved.
The intention was to provoke discussion about how Magic was being built and what kind of company it might become.
Seven years later, 56 of those reflections have been brought together in The Last Paragraph. Taken as a whole, they are Acky’s closest answer to a deceptively simple question: What is Magic’s culture?
Acky Kamdar
Acky Kamdar is the CEO of Magic EdTech, where he leads a global team working to make digital learning more accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
His career spans EdTech, enterprise technology, artificial intelligence, and the services industry. Before joining Magic EdTech, he led large cross-functional teams at organizations including Genpact, Headstrong, TechSpan, Compaq Computers, and the HCL group of companies.
His professional interests include AI, machine learning, NLP, emerging technologies, and the changing nature of service businesses. The Last Paragraph, however, begins with a more human question: how do people build a company they can believe in, together?
Eighty emails. Seven
years. One last paragraph each time.
The Last Paragraph brings together 56 selected reflections, accompanied by short essays introducing each of its seven sections.
They were written in real time through a pandemic, rapid technological change, new ways of working, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence. Because they were not composed as a retrospective leadership manual, they do not smooth away the uncertainty or pretend that every question had a neat answer. Instead, they trace a company trying to learn, adapt, make better decisions, and prepare itself for what comes next.

The Magicians Speak
Straight from the team that makes the Magic happen.
Arjun Malhotra
ChairmanThe Last Paragraph is an engaging reflection on what it takes to build an organization where culture is not merely written on a wall but expressed through everyday behavior. Acky Kamdar uses the journey of Magic EdTech to explore themes such as leadership, ownership, learning, resilience, teamwork, and the importance of people in building a lasting institution.
What makes the book interesting is its personal and organizational perspective. Rather than presenting leadership as a collection of abstract management theories, Kamdar appears to focus on the stories, experiences, and choices through which culture actually develops. The recurring idea seems to be that an organization’s character is created one decision—and one “paragraph”—at a time. Employees responding to the book particularly highlight its emphasis on learning, ownership, values, and the people behind the organization.
The book’s greatest strength is therefore its authenticity. It is essentially a CEO sharing the lessons of building and sustaining a company with the people who helped build it. That makes it especially relevant for entrepreneurs, CEOs, managers, and young leaders interested in organizational culture.
A possible limitation is that readers looking for a conventional business book packed with frameworks, data or prescriptive management techniques may find it less analytical. Its value lies more in stories, reflection, and leadership philosophy than in a step-by-step management manual.
Overall: I would describe The Last Paragraph as a warm, thoughtful leadership-and-culture book, particularly valuable for anyone interested in how values translate into organizational behavior. Its most compelling message is that great organizations are ultimately built not by grand statements, but by the accumulated choices and actions of their people.
The Last Paragraph by Acky Kamdar is a compelling reflection on leadership, culture, and organizational alignment. What makes the book especially impactful is Acky’s ability to nudge the organization forward, one reflection at a time, using simple and relatable language that resonates across the company.
The book thoughtfully reinforces the importance of viewing decisions through the four cultural pillars, making culture a practical part of everyday business rather than a separate ideal. Over a seven-year journey, the evolution of these paragraphs also reveals how Magic, as an organization, has matured, shaped by real moments of action and inaction within the company. That makes the writing authentic and deeply relatable.
Most importantly, the book highlights Acky’s persistent effort to embed culture within the team as something as important as, if not more important than, growth and EBITDA performance, a powerful message from a CEO.
Having read these personalized reflections over the years, I have always looked forward to reading the “last paragraph” first in his monthly communication, before the rest of the business updates. That alone speaks to the book’s lasting value and impact.
It is a must-read for any leader who genuinely cares about building a long-lasting culture.
Having had the opportunity to be associated with Magic since our acquisition and to serve on the Board, I found The Last Paragraph particularly meaningful. I have experienced many of these reflections in real time over the past several years through Acky’s monthly emails to employees, which makes seeing them brought together in this book especially rewarding.
The beauty of the book is in its simplicity. Each reflection starts with an observation, an experience, or an idea, but often leads to a much deeper thought about leadership, culture, people, and life. What emerges is a fascinating record of a company’s journey and, equally importantly, the evolution of the thinking behind it.
Having watched this journey from the Board, I found myself revisiting many familiar moments and seeing them from a different perspective. The book is a reminder that meaningful leadership is often found not in grand pronouncements, but in the small observations and everyday conversations that shape an organization over time.
Congratulations to Acky on capturing these thoughts and this journey so beautifully. For anyone interested in leadership, culture, or simply the art of thoughtful reflection, The Last Paragraph is well worth reading.
The Last Paragraph is a great read. While ostensibly a book about culture – and how to build a great one – it is also a paradigm for problem-solving. How to cultivate a mindset for pursuing big deals (‘Antelope, Not Field Mice’), How to create and execute a fair and progressive framework for appraisals, How to reframe problems in order to solve them (‘The Houston Baggage Carousel’), and, of course, How to make sense of AI, are just some of its many lessons.
In writing this book, Acky Kamdar, Magic EdTech’s inimitable CEO, makes the case that daily problem-solving with an eye on the long-term aspiration may indeed be how great companies are built and run!
If you lead people through growth and change, I encourage you to read The Last Paragraph.
I read this start to finish on my flight to Seattle—five hours completely flew by. Having lived this 7–8 year journey, it felt less like reading a book and more like reliving our growth, wins, and hard-earned lessons.
Sections like “How We Anchor,” our core forces, and “Borderless Magician” captured our evolution and accessibility mission: “Digital learning for everyone.” Knowing our work helped people globally gain equal access is something I’ll carry forever.
Thank you for putting our story into words, and for your constant trust and leadership.
I particularly liked page 70, as that resonates with me and my working style. The story of Graeme Obree is a great reminder that progress does not always come from adding more. Sometimes, the real breakthrough comes from stepping back and identifying what we can remove. This is particularly relevant in our daily work, where we often manage multiple priorities, processes, and activities.
The Last Paragraph, by our CEO Acky Kamdar serves as the cultural DNA of Magic. It offers a transparent reflection of our evolution, showing how a Growth Mindset fuels innovation, cross-team collaboration drives momentum, and celebration honors true impact & transforms Identity. Communicated with rare honesty and heart, it is a must-read for every Magician.
“The Last Paragraph”, a book by our CEO, Acky Kamdar, made up of the closing paragraph from his monthly letters to us over the last 7 years. Reading it all together, as a book, hits differently than reading it one letter at a time. You start to see the thread. Of the 8 parts, “How We Endure” is the one that stayed with me the most. Because life doesn’t pause to check if we’re ready for it. It is written for “Magicians,” but honestly, I think it belongs to anyone who’s just trying to stay grounded and resilient, not by being perfect, but by choosing, again and again, to be good.

Where it ends — and where it doesn't
A book has to end somewhere. A culture doesn't. What's written here is only the paragraph before the next one — and at Magic EdTech, that next paragraph gets written by everyone who shows up and adds to it.
